Altar Servers - Knights of the Altar PDF Print E-mail

In the Roman Catholic Church, altar servers assist the priest and deacon during the Mass.

Altar servers have several duties that they are responsible for, such as carrying the processional cross, holding the candles during the gospel, carrying the incense and thurible, holding the Sacramentary for the celebrant, assisting the priest when he receives the gifts from the people, washing the hands of the priest before the prayer over the gifts, removing items from the altar during communion, and assisting the priest and the deacon as necessary.

In situations where the Bishop is present, there will often be two servers who will help him with his miter and crosier.

At Saint James, the purpose of the ministry is to provide altar servers at weekend Masses, funerals and weddings based on the core values of Reverence, Respect, Responsibility and Reliability.

In addition, the Knights of the Altar participate in social activities and strive to build friendships among the servers based on their Catholic faith.

Boys and girls in grades four through twelve are invited to join this ministry. Training for new servers is generally held during March and April every year. The new servers are welcomed into the ministry in May.
