"Ultreya" is a Spanish word meaning Onward! It was used by pilgrims to greet and encourage one another along the way of their journeys and is now used by the Cursillo community as the name for the meetings held after a Cursillo experience. Cursillo is a three-day weekend experience used by Catholic and other Christian organizations to train lay people to become effective leaders. One emphasis from the weekend is for participants to take what they have learned in the weekend back into the world on what is called “the fourth day.’’ Ultreya gathers groups to help “the fourth day’’ experience. It provides continuity by contributing to the maintenance of the Cursillo spirit and by revealing the reality of the living Church. At each Ultreya, members share their life experiences based on the three tenets of Cursillo life: i.e.: Prayer, Study and Action, or based on a passage from Scripture. This sharing can be contemplative in nature or may deal with an evangelizing experience. Ultreya is the natural extension of the life-changing experience of the Cursillo weekend and is wholly dependent on the example and energy of individual cursillistas and their desire to work together.
